Climatology: A hot and dry month of March

According to a bulletin from the National Institute of Meteorology (INM), the month of March 2024 was characterised by spring-like weather. Across Tunisia and in March, the average temperature reached 16.9 °C with a divergence of (+2.2) °C compared to normal (1991-2020).

The month of March 2024 therefore ranks 2nd among the hottest months of March since 1950. Concerning rain, the rains were very weak and the deficit surpassed 60%.

The total rainfall balance (27 main stations) for March 2024 was 313.7 mm, while the normal for the same stations was 887.2 mm, which represents 35.4% of the normal for the month. In the northern regions, the percentage of deficit ranged between 16% in Bizerte and 85% in Nabeul. In the central regions, the deficit varied from 42% in Monastir to 88% in Kasserine.

In the south, the deficit was also noteworthy in most regions where the percentage decrease varied between 5% in Tozeur and 80% in Tataouine and reached 98% in El Borma. The month of March of this year 2024 was in deficit. Over the period (1970-2024), the month of March 2024 is ranked the 5th driest month of Mars after March 2017 (301.7mm), March 1994 (292.7mm), March 2023 (182.7mm) and March 2000 ( 172.8mm).
