European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared on Thursday that the EC has invited Ukraine to join the European Union’s joint gas purchasing mechanism.
Speaking at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Von der Leyen said that the EU aims to ensure the operation of the Ukrainian electricity grid by providing 2,400 power generators and pledging €150 million for the procurement of required equipment. “Finally, we are inviting Ukraine to our energy platform for joint purchasing of gas,” the EC president announced, adding that this would help Kiev to overcome this winter and “many more to come” in spite of Russia’s attacks.
