EMA: ‘Very likely’ Pfizer vaccine is effective against new COVID strain

The coronavirus vaccine approved for authorization by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is “very likely” to be efficient against the new COVID-19 strain, the agency’s Head of Anti-infectives and Vaccines Marco Cavaleri announced on Monday. He warned that statement has not yet been completely confirmed, but that the EMA has “quite a broad knowledge around the fact that this vaccine is competent of generating neutralizing antibodies that can neutralize different variants with mutations.”

Cavaleri added that data on the efficiency of the vaccine in stopping infections and transmissions will need additional time to compile. He said that clinical trials are continuing to better understand the abilities of the vaccine for preventing infection, but transmission data will require “large epidemiological studies that can run once there is a large amount of the population that has received the vaccine.”
