EU to increase aid to Palestinians to €100M

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared on Monday that the European Union will increase its humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza by €25 million to €100 million. In her speech at the EU Ambassadors Conference, she stated that it is “our moral duty to demonstrate our full solidarity with the people of Israel” but that “aiding civilians in Gaza is essential too” as the humanitarian situation is “dire.”

Von der Leyen said it is important that Israel “strive to avoid civilian casualties and be targeted” in its attacks because “every human life matters.” She added that the EU is working with Israel, Egypt and the United Nations to let more aid convoys into Gaza as the volume of aid “remains too small.” She said the union is trying to reinforce the logistic capacities of the Rafah crossing from Egypt into Gaza, as well as working on other routes, such as a maritime corridor from Cyprus.
