France – Lyon: Despite ban, 150 pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered, 4 arrests

Despite the prefectural ban, about 150 pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered on Place Gabriel-Péri in Lyon early in the evening this Monday, October 9. The event was marked by slogans and tensions which led to four detentions.

The prefecture had previously prohibited this demonstration, arguing that it had not been the subject of any prior declaration. Nevertheless, the Antifa Lyon Group, the organizer of the event, maintained its rally to express its support for the “Palestinian resistance” and condemn the ban as an attack on the freedom to demonstrate.

The gathering was managed by a large police force. The first tensions broke out after the expression of insulting slogans, in particular, “Israel assassin, Macron complicit”. The police reacted by employing tear gas and charging at the demonstrators. In total, four people were arrested and eight were fined, according to information provided by the prefecture.

The ban on this demonstration was motivated by the Rhône prefecture’s fears about possible incidents between pro-Palestinian participants and members of the Jewish community, particularly since pro-Palestine tags had been noted. in the Lyon metropolitan area and pro-Palestinian posters were stuck in the T4 tramway during the weekend.
