The Irish Parliament selected Simon Harris , the leader of the Fine Gael party and the serving Further and Higher Education Minister, as the country’s next prime minister following Leo Varadkar’s resignation last month.
The 37-year-old government minister received the support of 88 votes, while 69 members opposed his appointment.
“I accept this new role, ready for the challenge and full of determination…This is a time of great challenge, it is a time when leadership matters,” Harris said in the speech following the vote as quoted by the Irish Independent.
