A cold blast of winter weather across the U.S. plummeted Texas into a freezing emergency Monday that cut off power for more than 2 million people, closed grocery shops and air travel and sent cars skidding on dangerously snowy and slick roads.
Temperatures dropped into the single-digits as far south as San Antonio, and houses that had already been without electricity for hours had no certainty about when the lights and heat would return.
The Texas Department of Transportation advised preparing for “a marathon of historically cold air”, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated, “This will be probably more snow over a larger swath of land to a higher degree than ever before in Texas history.”
On the other hand,More than 150 million people were under a winter storm warning, winter weather advisory or ice storm warning in 25 states, stretching over 2,000 miles from southern Texas to northern Maine, the National Weather Service said.
