White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki affirmed on Tuesday that it wasn’t inevitable that the Taliban will take over Afghanistan, following the full withdrawal of United States military personnel from the country.
Psaki stated that now was the time for the Afghan military to utilize the training, assistance, and security equipment that they have received over the past 20 years from the US. Furthermore, she likewise remarked that the Afghan government needs “political will” to fight against the Taliban and that ultimately it was up to them to “figure out how their future looks like.”
Additionally, Psaki said that the US “doesn’t have the luxury to feel disappointed” with the current situation in Afghanistan, as they are still on their deadline to fully leave the country. Lastly, she reminded that Afghans will continue to be provided with assistance in excess of $2.5 billion even after the US leaves the country.
