South Korea: Tritium level in sea below standard level

The level of tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, present in the sea after Japan began releasing contaminated water from the disabled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is below the standard, Park Ku-yeon of South Korea’s Office for Government Policy Coordination noted on Monday.

“The concentration within 3 kilometres of the nuclear plant was far below the standard limit,” Park said at a press conference, adding that Japan has so far let go of 246 billion becquerels of tritium.

Park likewise remarked that South Korea has sent three officials to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) office in Fukushima for updates on the matter.
