Strong earthquake hits northern Japan

A powerful earthquake hit northern Japan , the Japan Meteorological Agency stated.

The magnitude 5.5 earthquake averaged a lower five on the 7-point Japanese seismic intensity scale in parts of Aomori Prefecture, and 4 in parts of Iwate Prefecture.
The quake’s epicentre was in the sea off Aomori Prefecture and the temblor struck at a depth of 50 kilometres, the agency added.
