Last year in Tunisia police units specialized in fighting violence against women reported 65,000 criminal complaints, while 14,000 calls were delivered to the Tunisian emergency number for violence against women, announced the Tunisian minister for the woman, family and the elderly, Imen Houimel. She affirmed the rise in the number of cases of violence against women and children notwithstanding legislation to fight the widespread phenomenon. The announcement was made during a press conference to launch the campaign ”16 days of activism against gender violence”.
Out of the total number of complaints, 19,000 were given to national guard units and 46,000 to national security units.
During the course of 2019, magistrates treated some 3,370 cases of violence against women, 2,500 of which were linked to domestic violence.
The emergency number 1899 received 14,000 calls mostly regarding violence against women while the number 1809 registered 4,700 calls including 500 that concerned cases of violence against children. The number has increased sevenfold also considering the lockdown period due to the healthcare emergency
