Tunisia-Are we prepared for heavy rain? Here’s an expert’s answer (Audio)

Expert in development and water resources Houcine Rahili told Tunisie Numérique that “variations in atmospheric pressure generate severe climatic events, especially in terms of bad weather”.

Today, extreme weather events are becoming more and more countless. In Libya, the town of Derna was totally devastated by floods which caused thousands of casualties among its inhabitants.

As evidence, the month of July 2023 was the hottest month in the world since 1850. The same goes for Tunisia. The month of July 2023 was the hottest ever registered since 1950. The average temperature (27 main stations) registered was higher than the reference average (1991-2020) with a significant difference of +4°C.

“Development efforts and systems for rainwater drainage to restrict the damage that could cause rapid concentration of water in wadis and extreme floods passing through cities are inadequate. The state of the equipment is not, in my opinion, sufficient in dealing with extreme situations,” said Houcine Rahili, who recalled the damage caused by the Nabeul floods in 2018.
