In a statement to Tunisie Numérique, head of the national coronavirus vaccination campaign and director of the Institut Pasteur, Hechmi Louzir, disclosed that the black fungus is an “opportunistic fungus” which could in some rare cases be generated by the coronavirus.
It is an infection that arose in India, according to Louzir, who revealed that no case has been reported in Tunisia yet. Those most affected are those with immune problems, particularly type 2 diabetes, he added.
One of the causes of the spread of this disease in India is the usage of corticosteroids to treat the coronavirus because the drug decreases the immune system.
Louzir further cited the hygienic conditions and poor health infrastructure in India as grounds for the spread of the black fungus in that country.
