Tunisia-BLACK_LIVES_MATTER trends in Tunisia

The murder of George Floyd ignited demonstrations across the globe both on streets and on social media. The hashtag #BLM or Black Lives Matter is trending on the social platforms to denounce racism. Twitter has risen as a platform to address the issue. In the meanwhile, Tunisia like many countries joined the rally, Tunisian users of the platform have been trending BlackLivesMatter in the last couples of days.

The murder of George Floyd was not the first if not the last, the 46-year-old Floyd, was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by a Minneapolis police officer Kellie Chauvin. The cop bound him to the ground with his knee on Floyd’s neck not letting him breathe as the latter screamed to him breathe. Floyd eventually died and the video of the wicked act went viral triggering anger and violent protests. Kellie Chauvin was officially charged with third-degree murder.

On its part, Tunisia was one of the first African or Arab countries to make racial discrimination condemned by jail time after its parliament overwhelmingly voted in a new anti-racism law. In January 1846, Tunisia became the first Arab country to formally abolish slavery.

The legislation displayed shifting attitudes in a country that is melting pot for various religions, cultures and ideas and where an increasing number of people consider protecting racial minorities should be a priority. Back in 2019, A woman faced prosecution in  Sfax allegedly throwing insults at a teacher who threw her daughter out of class. According to the prosecutors at that time the woman had insulted the teacher over the colour of his skin.

The human soul is one, whether white Asian or black, Humans are defined by their actions and humanity and despite the technological advancement made by the human race, Racism, xenophobia and intolerance are problems that are prevalent in all societies that is to say that Discrimination is being exercised by human groups on the grounds of sex, ethnicity, religion, political or ideological belief, social origin or socio-economic status and practices that fail to respect differences or value diversity. Humanity is bright and self-evident, and it has no other colour and no matter what nothing can justify the brutality of what occurred to Floyd or injustice that is being exercised throughout societies.

The majority of sufferers of racial discrimination in the region are communities (and members of communities) with distinct identities based on such factors as ethnicity, culture, nationality, language and territory; the common factor is that they look, and are observed as, different from the dominant identity understood as the national one.

Moreover,One of the most fundamental human rights principles is the equal dignity and rights of all people. This equality is established in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in Article 7 of the Austrian Federal Constitution. Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights also prohibits discrimination, stating that persons should not be treated unequally or discriminated based on personal characteristics such as sex, race, colour, national or social origin, religion, language or opinion.
