Tunisia: Chicken’s kilo goes from 5 to 7 dinars

Faouzi Zayani, a member of the National Council of the National Union of Farmers (SYNAGRI), stated that successive administrations have not taken the poultry production system seriously and the Tunisian consumer is paying the price today of this sector marginalization.

In an interview with Express FM, Zayani revealed that the rise in poultry meat prices has had a fast and exponential increase in recent times.

We must expect, according to him, an upsurge in egg prices following the increase in production cost.

He ensured that the breeder and the farmer do not assume responsibility for the prices. The fact remains that the poultry system is vulnerable and can be impacted by many factors including climatic conditions.

He likewise indicated that the increase in temperatures has impacted productivity. Correspondingly, the change in the composition of fodder also affected productivity and profitability and accordingly the prices of poultry meats.

In another part, he remarked that the number of breeders has declined due to the hegemony of large companies and the quasi-monopolization of the sector.

He confirmed that the price of flesh chicken per kilo has increased from 5 dinars to 7 dinars, emphasising that this price increase was followed by a decrease in production, especially with the tourist recovery during July.

He still reiterated that it is extremely likely that egg prices are up in the coming weeks with an increase of 60 millimes for four egg units.
