Tunisia – Clear drop of around 24.3% in trade balance deficit

The National Institute of Statistics reported today, Thursday, a 24.3% reduction in the trade deficit at the end of February 2024, settling at -1784.1 million dinars (MD), compared to -2358.6 MD registered during November and December 2023. This information was underscored in a bulletin dedicated to foreign trade.

 
 
 

The National Institute of Statistics clarified that this deficit is largely due to the deficit recorded with certain countries such as China (-1211.8 thousand dinars), Russia (-1031.3 thousand dinars), and Algeria (-423.1 thousand dinars). mD), Turkey (-390.7 mD), and Greece (-339.3 mD) and Ukraine. (-222.4 D).

On the other hand, the trade balance of goods documented a surplus with other countries, notably France (966.6 mmD), Italy (589.6 mmD), Germany (386.1 mmD), Libya ( 236.3 mmD) and Morocco (82 mmD). The coverage rate grew by 4.6 points compared to the same period in 2023, to reach 85.6%.

Exports rose by 5.9% compared to an increase of 11.6% during the same period of 2023, attaining the level of 10,637.6 million dinars, compared to 10,044.3 million dinars during the last two months of 2023. This increase primarily involves exports of food products and the agricultural industries sector, which registered an increase of (+56.5%) due to the increase in sales of olive oil (1323.9 million dinars against 663.9 million dinars) as well as exports from the mechanical and electrical industries (+4.3%).

As for imports, they recorded a slight upsurge of 0.2%, compared to a jump of 7.4% during the same period in 2023.

In value, imports amounted to 12,421.7 thousand dinars, compared to 12,402.9 thousand dinars during the last two months of 2023. This semi-stagnation results, on the one hand, from the increase documented in the level of imports of energy products (+5 percent) capital goods (+11.6 percent), and consumer goods (+3.7 percent).
