Tunisia-Dissolution of the CSM: The association of magistrates declares new escalation measures

Remarking on the latest decision of the President of the Republic Kais Saied, the association of Tunisian magistrates voiced its attachment to respect for the independence of the judiciary and of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM) since the establishment of exceptional measures on July 25th.

The association clarified that the CSM takes care to safeguard the legal bodies against any form of interference or pressure. It likewise denied the dissolution of the CSM while condemning the campaigns carried out against the judges for successive months explaining that this was at the root of the threats of attack on the physical integrity of the latter.

The association also highlighted the gravity of the remarks of the president of the CSM Youssef Bouzakher who said he was threatened. According to the same source, the dissolution of the CSM comprises an interference in the judiciary. It called on all magistrates to pause their activity in all courts on February 9 and 10, 2022 to oppose the flagrant intervention in the judiciary demanding the organization of a demonstration the following Thursday in front of the headquarters of the CSM.

“All the components of civil society, magistrates, political figures and living forces defending the independence of the judiciary are called upon to partake in this protest movement” reads the same press release. The association called for a general meeting to be held in the presence of all the magistrates this Saturday, February 12, 2022, in Tunis to examine the situation of the legal power.
