Tunisia-Ennahdha: Kais Saied stepped on the constitution and violated the prerogative of the prime minister

Reacting to the speech of the president of the republic Kaïs Saïed last Sunday on the occasion of the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the internal security forces, Ennahdha movement declared its bewilderment at the violation of the Constitution by the President of the Republic.

In a press release,The party stated it was stunned “to see the President of the Republic resorting to an ancient document (the text of the 1959 Constitution) to prove his hegemonic tendencies”.

The movement additionally condemned the fact that Kaïs Saïed proclaimed himself supreme commander of all the armed forces, considering that the President of the Republic has not only violated the Constitution and the laws in force but additionally overstepped prime minister Hichem Mechichi.

“Interfering with security institutions in political disputes is a threat to democracy, social peace and the achievements of the revolution,” Ennahdha said.

The movement has expressed its rejection of what it defines as “hegemonic tendencies of the President of the Republic” calling on the democratic forces to decline these attitudes and to complete the democratic process by setting up the Constitutional Court.

Ennahdha, at the same time, called on the President of the Republic to respect “seriously” the Constitution under which he was elected and to stop hampering the functioning of state.
