Tunisia-Environmental disaster-Tons of waste in Sfax: Mayor Mounir Loumi explains

Citizens protested about the increase of 1,800 tons of waste in Sfax pointing to the consequences of such an environmental and health disaster. Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, the mayor of Sfax Mounir Elloumi said that approximately 300 tons are added daily to the garbage. He added that after coordinating with regional officials, it was decided to set up a new estuary for a brief period. This, he said, is an interim solution.

The official added that the state has pledged to permanently close the Sfax estuary towards the end of the current year, revealing that the problem could be resolved in 5 days if the mechanisms and efforts are increased. He further said that the finalization of the study on waste management requires a period of 3 years emphasising that the realization of the idea is difficult. “The length of the study along with other complications like permits slowed down the process. In order to find a solution, we proposed the creation of a regional agency with the participation of all the municipalities of Sfax to improve waste management “he assured.
