Tunisia – Illegal burial: Arrest of 10 medical and administrative executives of hospital in Ariana

The Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance in Ariana has granted authorization to the judicial police officers of Ariana to seize and apprehend several members of the medical and administrative team of a hospital in Ariana. Further, the owner of a private company is included in this action. The decision follows the finding that the body of a sub-Saharan migrant had decomposed in a hospital due to not being placed in the mortuary room and was then buried in a manner contrary to applicable laws.

Information obtained by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Ariana Court of First Instance indicated that the body of a foreign immigrant from a sub-Saharan country was improperly buried. The person passed away during the previous week in a hospital, and his body was neglected, not placed in the mortuary room, resulting in decomposition. The hospital then employed a private company to bury the body.

In response, the Public Prosecutor’s Office authorized the initiation of inquiries . As of Friday, January 5, 2024, ten administrative and medical personnel from the hospital and the owner of the private company responsible for the improper burial have been arrested.
