Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, Ennahdha member Imed Khemiri criticized the Defense Committee’s recent remarks concerning the assassinations of Shokri Belaid and Muhammad Brahmi. He accused the Defense Committee of perpetuating deception and falsehoods for 11 years, especially in involving the Ennahda Movement, known for its moderate and peaceful stance, in these high-profile killings.
He asserted that from the start, the Defense Committee manipulated public opinion both domestically and internationally by wrongfully accusing the Ennahda Movement, which was among the ruling political forces at the time of the assassinations. He emphasised that the recent closure of the inquiry by the court, after 11 years, discredited the Defense Committee’s claims, remarking that no leaders or officials from the Ennahda Movement were implicated in the case.
Furthermore, Khemiri indicated that the Ennahda Movement has officially asked that the trial be broadcast live to expose what he describes as the Defense Committee’s unabashed lies and defamation. He also addressed the specific allegations against Rashid Ghannouchi who is alleged by the Defense Authority to have been implicated in Belaid’s assassination. He clarified that Ghannouchi considers himself a political prisoner and believes that the judiciary, since the dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council and the dismissal of several judges who declined to follow directives post-July 25, has been compromised.
