Tunisia-Minister of Religious Affairs receives Archbishop of Tunis

Minister of Religious Affairs Brahim Chaibi, on Tuesday, received Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tunis Ilario Antoniazzi.

The meeting addressed the situation of the Christian community in Tunisia as well as the working conditions and concerns of Christian religious leaders in the country, the ministry said in a statement.

Brahim Chaibi reaffirmed that Tunisia is a country of interfaith tolerance and that Islam insists on respect for religions and the protection of people of all faiths.

He encouraged the Archbishop of Tunis to make better known the richness and diversity of civilisations that have marked Tunisia and to promote religious tourism in the country.

For his part, Archbishop Antoniazzi welcomed the climate of trust and serenity in which the Christian community in Tunisia lives, thanks to the security guaranteed by the State in the practice of their religion and the respect for their rituals of daily life.

«This respect and security have increased the love and esteem of the Christian community in Tunisia,» he added.

He also articulated willingness to bring peoples and religions closer together, contribute to spreading peace in the world and make Tunisia known as a land of unity and harmonious and peaceful coexistence, the statement quotes.

The Christian community is made up of about 35,000 members in Tunisia, Christianity being the second religion in the country after Islam.
