Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, ISIE spokesman Mohamed Tlili Mnasri reported on Monday, January 22, 2024, that the second round of local council elections is focused on individual candidates. Out of a total of 2,129 electoral districts, only 779 districts are implicated in the second round.
Mnasri stated that the number of candidates has dropped to 1,500, compared to 7,205 candidates in the first round. The number of voters has also declined to 4 million and 200 thousand. He expects an increase in the voter turnout for this second round of elections.
According to our speaker, this anticipation is based on the absence of electoral districts with only one candidate. Further, many districts in major cities are not partaking in the second round. He stressed that limiting the candidates to only two would likely contribute to a higher voter turnout, making the elections more acceptable to the public.
