Tunisia-Mohamed Bizani calls Presidency of the Republic to “deal with the customs file and hold the corrupt to account”

The Secretary-General of the National Union of Tunisian Customs Officers and Agents, Mohamed Bizani called on the supervisory authority to be alert and to conduct a radical reform of the sector. According to him, the situation is “crucial”.

Mr Bizani stressed that there is an actual war within a sensitive and strategic body that is customs, particularly since the texts regulating the sector give all the powers to the Director-General, “which spreads wide the open to all forms of corruption and offences”.

In a statement given to TAP, he stated that after the date of July 25, the dismissed agents whom he called “honest” are still waiting for a shift in the situation and the beginning of a radical process reform “which restores significance to the customs facility and its skills through a true diagnosis of corruption and offences and breaches”.

In this context, he called on the Presidency of the Republic to “deal with the customs file and hold the corrupt to account”, referring to their meeting yesterday with the Governor of Tunis, who stated he was aware of the case dossier and vowed to bring it to the attention of the Head of State for settlement.

Quoting several examples, the union official remarked that the litigation and prosecution department under the General Directorate of Customs lost 1,400 billion Tunisian millimes due to the end of the legal deadlines for several cases. “Again, no customs measure was taken against the magistrate intercepted in possession of currency and who remained in a state of freedom”, he added, calling for a deep inquiry to be opened into the management customs seizures and tighten controls to inflict a policy of transparency in the management of the customs circuit.
