Tunisia-Mornaguia ‘s prisoners on hunger strike

Several inmates from the Mornaguia civil prison began a hunger strike. They protest against inhuman conditions within the jail.

The Observatory of Rights and Freedoms of Tunis has declared, today, Tuesday, January 10, having received numerous complaints from families. Complaints according to which the detainee in the civil prison of Mornaguia entered a hunger strike on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

According to the observatory, the detainees are protesting the inhuman conditions within the prison. The Observatory of Rights and Freedoms recalls that certain inhuman conditions and breaches emanating from certain officers and prison agents against prisoners had already been the subject of reports sent to national and international associations. And to add, in a press release, that “the number of strikers can be counted by tens, and the state of some of them is severe”.

The observatory points in particular to the “silence” and “indifference” of the jail administration in the face of the claims of the strikers, who protest in particular against the bad conditions of incarceration, overcrowding, the deprivation of an independent bed, The propagation of contagious diseases, negligence in medical care, the prohibition of the entry of medicines, growing material and verbal assaults against prisoners, abusive and vindictive transfers, the short duration of visits, etc. “

The observatory likewise calls for the national organization of prevention against torture, the Higher Committee on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, as well as other organizations to visit prisons and intervene urgently.
