Tunisia-Official: 25% of women are illiterate

Minister of Social Affairs, Malek Zahi, reported that 25% of Tunisian women are illiterate and that the total number of illiterates in Tunisia has reached two million.

Zahi said that more than 40% of illiterate women are in rural areas and that more than 50% of them live in certain delegations in the northwest and centre-west, including in particular the delegations of el Ala and Sidi: Amor Bouhajla and the delegations of Tela and Hassi Frid reporting to the governorate of Kasserine.

He also confirmed that his department is operating to promote the sector of the fight against illiteracy and adult education by intensifying efforts aimed at drawing learners to social education centers, reports tap.
