The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Tunisia published on Monday, June 14, 2021, a press release which it said to have, during the first half of 2021, received detailed information relating to several serious incidents involving security forces, expressing concern in this regard.
OHCHR remarked that a set of disturbing incidents that happened during the first half of 2021, which ended in severe human rights breaches by internal security forces, adds the same source. Therefore, in its January 28 statement, the National Authority for the Prevention of Torture (INPT) recorded violations of the dignity and physical integrity of incarcerated persons, including minors, by law enforcement officials during its visits to various places of detention across the nation following the mid-January riots.
In February, judicial authorities declared an inquiry into the torture of a man in National Guard custody in Monastir.
On June 8, a young man passed away in still unclear circumstances while in police custody in Sidi Hassine Sejoumi (Tunis governorate).
The Office of the High Commissioner urges the authorities to open or finalize without delay transparent, independent and prompt administrative and judicial investigations into these allegations.
It stated that the effective punishment of those responsible for these violations will mark the end of impunity for those responsible for law enforcement
The Government is called upon to increase its efforts to translate its repeated engagement to act in accordance with national and international human rights standards, into concrete and practical actions directed at effectively ensuring fundamental rights and freedoms. and the security of individuals, ”notes the OHCHR.
The OHCHR Office in Tunisia stands ready to proceed to give technical support to the Ministries of the Interior and Justice, in collaboration with the constitutional bodies for defending human rights as well as civil society to achieve this goal, the same source stated.
