The National Council of the Order of Pharmacists of Tunisia has expressed its surprise and concern regarding the inclusion of pharmacies in a new category subject to additional income taxation. The press release, dated December 13, 2023, reveals that the 2,400 pharmacies in Tunisia, primarily of medium and small economic size, should not be grouped with large businesses, such as oil companies, insurance companies, banks, and supermarkets.
The order highlights the absence of clear standards that led to the incorporation of pharmacies into this new tax measure, deeming it an “unjustified discriminatory” procedure. The Council emphasizes that pharmacies play a crucial role in preserving the health of citizens, particularly in areas without state medical establishments, and have actively supported the state in various capacities.
The National Council of the Order of Pharmacists of Tunisia is urging lawmakers to consult with them before proposing legislation that may negatively impact the private pharmacy sector. They argue that such measures could create unnecessary challenges and jeopardize the consistent availability of medicines. The Council is calling for the suspension of the application of this new tax measure for pharmacies and requests rectification within the framework of the complementary finance law.
The statement emphasizes the readiness of the Order to engage in discussions with all relevant stakeholders to address the current situation of the sector and collaboratively develop solutions and alternatives that serve the best interests of the country.
