Tunisia – Protests in front of Italian embassy on sidelines of Meloni’s visit

Civil society organizations organized a protest today Wednesday in front of the Italian embassy in Tunisia, on the occasion of the visit of  Italian Prime MinisterGiorgia Meloni to Tunisia.

The spokesperson for the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, Romdhane Ben Amor, told TAP that “Meloni expects the improvement of climatic factors, which is accompanied by an increase in irregular migration operations, to place  pressure on Tunisia to keep the borders of Europe.” He emphasised that the Italian Prime Minister “is operating to limit the flow of migrants and to control migrants wishing to reach Italian territory, particularly those of non-Tunisian nationality, by encouraging Tunisia to transfer them to more closely monitored detention centres.” with a view to their expulsion. “

He said that “there are many indicators that Tunisia is playing a significant role in the issue of surveillance of European borders by proxy, such as stopping around 80,000 migrants last year from reaching Italian shores. , in addition to preventing around 21,000 migrants since the beginning of this year.”
