Tunisia-SNJT condemns “ISIE’s withholding information from journalists”

The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) denounced the attempts by the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) to dodge journalists’ questions during the press conference held on Monday to announce the preliminary results of the first round of legislative elections.

«This is a clear violation of the right of journalists and citizens to information and through follow-up of elections that are decisive for the country’s history,» the SNJT said in a statement.

«ISIE has tried to withhold information from the media and to evade responsibility.»

For the union, this is evidence of the electoral commission’s denial of the excesses committed during the management of the electoral process, «as evidenced by the low turnout in the vote.»

The SNJT also stated that the electoral commission had «ordered the polling stations and its local branches not to communicate the voter turnout in an updated manner.»

«The ISIE has been withholding information and showing disrespect for journalists since the July 25 referendum,» the same source reads.
