Tunisia-Tunisia investigates Battle field of Zama between Carthage and Rome

The research project focused on identifying the battlefield between Carthage and Rome, particularly at the Battle of Zama, was discussed in a working meeting on Monday, December 4, chaired by the Minister of Cultural Affairs.

This project aims to enhance the development of the sites and monuments of Zama, located in the governorate of Siliana. The identification of this historical site is expected to have a significant impact on tourist investment and cultural tourism in Tunisia.

During the meeting, the Minister of Cultural Affairs called for the establishment of a team comprising all relevant stakeholders to create a timetable for the completion of this project.

Field visits conducted in the first phase of the project, utilizing new technologies, allowed for the inventory of over 52 km² within a total area of 600 km².

The Battle of Zama, fought in 202 BC, was the decisive conflict concluding the Second Punic War. It involved the Roman armies led by Scipio Africanus and the Numidian cavalry led by Massinissa against the Carthaginians commanded by Hannibal Barca. The project holds historical significance and aims to preserve and promote this important chapter in history.
