The BBC and the European Broadcasting Union said on Monday that the United Kingdom will host the next Eurovision song contest on behalf of Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict between Kyiv and Moscow. Previously, the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra (pictured) won the 66th annual Eurovision Song Contest in Italy earlier this year.
”It is a matter of great regret that our colleagues and friends in Ukraine are not able to host the 2023 Eurovision song contest,” Tim Davie, the BBC director general, said in a statement today. ”The BBC is committed to making the event a true reflection of Ukrainian culture alongside showcasing the diversity of British music and creativity,” he added, emphasizing that it would be ”a great privilege” to host such an event.
