Ursula von der Leyen elected as EU commission president

Ursula von der Leyen was selected to head the European Commission. Replacing Jean-Claude Juncker, Ursula von der Leyen was voted through a secret ballot and obtained the votes of 38 MEP. Ursula von der Leyen has been proved as the European commission’s first female president and the first German to lead EU for over 50 years.
The Brussels-born 60-year-old served as Germany defence minister. She got elected to Lower Saxony’s state parliament in 2003. Her career continued when she was appointed as the federal minister of labour and social affairs until 2013. she joined Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) party.
