US, Iraq reportedly to begin talks on military withdrawal

The United States and Iraq will start talks on the withdrawal of US military troops from the country, CNN reported, quoting sources with knowledge on the matter.

The two countries are close to an agreement regarding the Higher Military Commission dialogue announced by the US Department of Defense in August of 2023. A part of the dialogue will be on the future withdrawal of US forces from the country, as the US-led anti-ISIS coalition has completed its task and brought the terror group to a “shadow of its former self.” The US would prefer a schedule of withdrawal based on “conditions in Iraq,” with the Middle Eastern country wishing for an established timeline, regardless of the stability of the security situation in the country, according to the report.
