USA: Demonstration at the Capitol in Washington for a ceasefire in Gaza

Demonstrators, including some members of the Jewish community, entered the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. to ask for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. This protest took place about ten days after the beginning of Hamas attacks against Israel. It was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, an activist organization of American Jews opposed to the Israeli government’s policies towards the Palestinian people and the strikes carried out in Gaza.

Protesters voiced concern over the situation in Gaza, calling the events a “genocide” and criticizing U.S. support for Israel. The protest comes after the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a “humanitarian pause” in the confrontation between Hamas and Israel. Washington justified its veto by noting the lack of mention of “Israel’s right to defend itself” in the resolution. The resolution would also have condemned Hamas’ “heinous terrorist attacks” and any violence against civilians.
