Head of State and Agriculture Minister discuss water crisis

President of the Republic Kais Saied had a meeting, Friday at the Palace of Carthage, with Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Abdelmonem Belati during which they discussed the water crisis facing Tunisia, reads a statement of the Presidency of the Republic.

More particularly, they focused on ways to overcome the water crisis and its potential consequences. They considered the possibility of creating a desert land development office in the country. “Several countries have successfully turned desert lands into green areas,” the Head of State said.

“Tunisia only lacks the implementation of innovative policies, including the creation of large water desalination stations powered by solar energy.”

Saied underlined that “this project is quite feasible” adding that “the solution does not hinge on agriculture but on the possibility to create a junction between the Gulf of Gabès and Gafsa, with a pipeline which will be used to wash phosphate and provide water to arid lands.”

The issue of recovering State lands and fighting against the scourge of corruption which has plagued this key sector was also addressed during the meeting.
