The rate of infections with cholera and acute watery diarrhoea in Yemen has grown enormously in recent months, and hospitals and medical centres have registered hundreds of infections and at least 14 deaths.
According to data from the Yemeni Ministry of Health, during the period from October 16 to April 5, 2,583 suspected cases of contamination were received, of which 236 cases were confirmed.
Aden Governorate came in first place with 39 percent of the documented infections, Taiz Governorate placed second with 21 percent, then Lahj Governorate with 17 percent.
According to local media, the Ministry of Public Health and Population informed the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean Region that the country is undergoing a health emergency, and there is an increase in cases of cholera in several regions, which needs the organization’s intervention.
On Monday, the Yemeni Minister of Health, Qasim Buhaibah, revealed that Yemen is witnessing a new outbreak of the cholera epidemic, in light of the inadequate response and scarcity of funding to confront it.
Buhaybah said on the “X” platform, “The health system in Yemen confronts great challenges from the wave of cholera cases, which started with illegal immigrants and then spread to the Yemeni people.”
