22 states call for tripling of nuclear energy capacity

At the COP28 climate summit, 22 countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, signed a statement pledging to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This commitment is based on reports from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Nuclear Association, which indicate that tripling nuclear energy capacity is essential to achieving global net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees by 2050.

In addition to the capacity expansion, the signatory countries expressed their commitment to ensuring that nuclear power plants are operated responsibly and adhere to the highest standards of safety, sustainability, security, and non-proliferation. They also emphasized responsible long-term management of nuclear fuel waste. The countries further committed to mobilizing investments in nuclear power and promoting resilient supply chains to support the expansion of nuclear energy.
