Tunisia-Jendouba: Rainbow pheasants, a rare species, seized in Tabarka

Intended for smuggling to neighbouring countries, birds, including remarkably rare and endangered species, were lately seized by units of the national guard in Tabarka (Jendouba Governorate).

These birds, including Rainbow  pheasants, in particular, originate from Central Asia and were in the possession of two people intercepted by security forces during a routine control operation of a hired hand from Tunis to Algeria, a security source told TAP.

The birds seized were brought to the General Directorate of Forests in Jendouba to take care of them, added the same source.

Native to China, the Rainbow  Pheasant has been introduced to Europe for over 2,000 years. The male is characterized by a shimmering plumage while the female sports a discreet plumage. He is characterized by his beautiful voice and prefers to live in bamboo forests, we read in specialized sites.
