Lula officially elected next Brazilian president

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won his third term in office after the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court confirmed he beat current President Jair Bolsonaro in the runoff vote.

Lula, who served as president between 2003 and 2010, secured 50.83% of the votes, compared to Bolsonaro’s 49.17% with 98.86% of votes counted.

Several world leaders already congratulated Lula with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador saying that following his victory “there will be equality and humanism” and French President Emmanuel Macron claiming Lula’s victory ” opens a new page in the history of Brazil.”
