Algeria intensifies boycott of Moroccan ports

Algeria is intensifying its boycott of Moroccan ports in terms of imports. The Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (Abef) issued a notice on January 29, following a directive of January 10, 2024, banning the transhipment of goods through Moroccan ports.

This measure mainly involves perishable products, such as meat, shipped before January 10. Banks are required not to accept direct debits for transport contracts involving transhipment through Moroccan ports.

In answer, shipowners CMA CGM and Maersk reorganized their services to avoid Tangier, Morocco, favouring routes via Algeciras or Valencia.

This boycott, following the breakdown of diplomatic ties between Algeria and Morocco in August 2021, takes place in the context of increased tensions, influencing the strategic decisions of economic players in the region.
