Apple Vision Pro Preorders Open, but Netflix and Others Opt Out of Native Apps

The highly anticipated Apple Vision Pro is now available for preorder, promising a groundbreaking spatial computing experience. However, some users might find themselves disappointed to learn that popular streaming services, including Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify, have opted not to provide native apps for the Vision Pro. In this article, we’ll explore the reasons behind this decision and how users can still access content from these platforms on Apple’s latest spatial computer.

According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Netflix has confirmed that it has no plans to launch a native app for the Apple Vision Pro. This decision extends to YouTube and Spotify as well. While users can still watch content from these platforms on the Vision Pro, they will need to use a web browser to access the streaming giant’s library.

A Netflix spokesperson told Gurman, “Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs.” This approach seems to be in line with Netflix’s strategy, as Gurman had reported last year that Netflix had no intentions of creating a native app for the Vision Pro. Instead, Netflix plans to allow its existing iPad app to run on the headset unmodified.

The Apple Vision Pro runs on visionOS, a platform that shares core elements with both iOS and MacOS. Gurman had previously reported that Netflix had no plans for a native app but would allow its iPad app to run on the Vision Pro without modifications. John Gruber from Daring Fireball further confirmed this by stating that the iPad app worked “just fine” on the headset during testing.

While some major players like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify are skipping native apps at launch, Apple has secured commitments from other popular streaming services. Disney+, Crunchyroll, Prime Video, and Paramount+ are among the services available to Vision Pro users. These platforms have embraced the spatial computing experience, contributing to the diverse content offerings on Apple’s latest device.

The Apple Vision Pro is set to be released on February 2. For those eager to experience the future of spatial computing, preorders are currently open. To guide potential buyers, Apple has released a pre-order guide outlining the steps to secure the highly anticipated Vision Pro.

While the absence of native apps from major streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify may be a disappointment for some users, the ability to access content through web browsers ensures that these platforms remain accessible on the Apple Vision Pro. As the spatial computing landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how streaming services adapt to provide immersive and seamless experiences for users on innovative platforms like the Vision Pro.
