Haitian police kills 5 armed environmental agents

Five armed agents of Haiti’s Security Brigade of Protected Areas (BSAP), an armed environmental group, were killed in a shootout with the Haitian National Police in Port-au-Prince, the National Union of Police Officers of the country told reporters on Thursday.

Police officers in Port-au-Prince were informed of the arrival of BSAP agents and issued an order to the agents to stop their vehicle, which they ignored. In the commotion that followed, the police killed five of the agents and arrested three, according to the news agency.

This clash came amid ongoing protests in the country that came ahead of February 7, the date by which Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry promised to step down. Henry has served as acting prime minister of the country since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.
