On September 21st, the International Organization for Migration – Tunisia (IOM) facilitated the voluntary assisted return of 19 Chadian nationals to their country of origin, as announced in an official press release.
All 19 individuals received direct assistance from IOM and its partners, including emergency accommodation at the IOM hostel in Zarzis, underscoring the organization’s commitment to their welfare.
Upon their return, these individuals will receive reintegration support, as stated in the press release. The IOM is dedicated to continuing its assisted voluntary return program from Tunisia in a safe and dignified manner and expresses gratitude for the support extended by the Government of the Czech Republic to assist the most vulnerable in Tunisia.
IOM’s voluntary return and reintegration assistance initiatives are integral components of its comprehensive approach to migration management.
In this context, the IOM emphasizes its commitment to providing a structured and dignified opportunity for migrants who, for various reasons, cannot or do not wish to remain in their host country and choose to voluntarily return to their country of origin.
It is worth noting that Tunisia has experienced a significant increase in irregular migration flows towards Europe, particularly the Italian coast, since the beginning of 2023. This surge is linked to ongoing crises in several African countries. Certain areas along the Tunisian coast are less than 150 km from the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The southeastern Tunisian coast frequently witnesses rescue operations for migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa. Some migrants have lost their lives or gone missing as a result of boat sinking.
