Macron warns that ‘Europe could die’

French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned on Thursday that Europe is “mortal and can die,” adding that its future depends on choices that “have to be made now.” He insisted that the European Union needs to boost its security independence, claiming that the union is coming to terms with global security risks but that “the awakening is still rather slow.”

Speaking at the Sorbonne, Macron said Europe is being “cornered” by the rise of regional powers such as Iran and that it must react more quickly to geopolitical changes. He said the EU is not a priority for the United States and that the EU does not have the “proper weapons” to face the risks on its own.
