Mexican president orders suspension of diplomatic ties with Ecuador

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador ordered the suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador Friday evening. The move comes after Ecuadorian police broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito and apprehended former Vice President Jorge Glas.

Glas, twice convicted of corruption charges, sought political asylum at the embassy in December, claiming persecution by Ecuador’s attorney general’s office. The arrest, which involved police forcefully entering the Mexican embassy, was confirmed by both Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the Ecuadorean president’s office.

“This is a flagrant violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty, for which I have instructed our foreign minister to state this authoritarian act, proceed legally and immediately declare the suspension of diplomatic relations with the government of Ecuador,” the Mexican president said on X.
