Iran: Police foil suicide bombings planned for Eid by ISIS

Iranian police announced on Saturday the detention of a prominent member of the Islamic State and two other members of the organization, accused of plotting a suicide attack during Eid al-Fitr this week.

Iranian media, quoting police, reported that Muhammad Zakir, known as “Ramesh”, and the two other members were apprehended in Karaj, west of the capital, Tehran, following clashes. Police said they also arrested 8 other individuals who were with them.

ISIS claimed responsibility for two bombings in Iran in January, which killed almost 100 people and wounded dozens more, during a memorial to commemorate the fourth anniversary of ISIS’s assassination. Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, was killed in Iraq during a US drone attack in 2020.

Iran arrested 35 people in January, including a commander of the Islamic State branch in Afghanistan (ISIS-K) believed to be connected to two January 3 bombings in the southern city of Kerman. -East of the country.
