Palestinian Poet and Memoirist Mourid Barghouti Dies at 76

Renowned Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti passed away on Sunday 14 February at the age of 76.

Barghouti, who is recognised for being a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause, was born in Ramallah on the West Bank in 1944.

He came to Cairo in 1963 to study English literature at Cairo University and graduated in 1967, after which he couldn’t go back to Ramallah for 30 years.

His return to Ramallah inspired his autobiographical novel Ra’aytu Ram Allah (I Saw Ramallah), which was later translated to English by his late wife, Egyptian iconic novelist Rawda Ashour.

They married in 1970, Their only son, Tamim, was born in 1977. The two of them were married for forty-four years; she passed in 2014
