Russian war against Ukraine: Present situation (Ukrainian Embassy in Tunisia)

SITUATION AT THE FRONT

• Russia continued attacking Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones. On January 2, Ukrainian air defence forces shot down 10 Kinzhal aero ballistic missiles; 59 X-101, X-555, X-55 cruise missile, 3 Kalibr cruise missiles. Ukraine repelled the largest ever combined missile attack, carried out with the use of hypersonic weapons. No country in the world has such an experience.

• The air defence forces of Ukraine managed to shoot down 10 Kinzhal aero ballistic missiles at a time. Moscow continues to state that it is technically impossible to shoot down a Kinzhal missile. Ukrainian soldiers proved their skills, and Western air defence systems proved their effectiveness and superiority over Russian weapons.

REACTION TO RUSSIAN TERROR

• The recent Russian attack showed a record-high number of missiles used. Russia was preparing for this act of terror for a long time. Objects attacked by the Russian army in Ukraine are exclusively civilian. Russia is at war with Ukrainian women, children, and older people.

• Ukrainians will not forgive Russian terror. These killings and destruction prove that the Kremlin does not seek peace.

• While the terrorist regime in Moscow continues to kill Ukrainians, Ukraine urges to terminate contacts with Russian diplomats in the capitals of civilized states and international organizations.

INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE

• The NATO-Ukraine Council will hold an emergency meeting in response to Russia’s recent massive missile attacks on Ukraine.

• NATO’s support for Ukraine is an important signal of Euro-Atlantic unity given the escalation of Russian terror. One of the key topics of the emergency meeting of the Council will be the issue of strengthening Ukraine’s air defence. Enhancing Ukraine’s defence capabilities is also enhancing NATO’s security.

• Russian missiles threaten not only Ukraine, but also NATO member states, for example, Poland and Romania.

UKRAINIAN PEACE FORMULA

• Ukraine and its partners are working closely to step up international support for the Ukrainian Peace Formula. Peace Formula is the only way to restore a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders must be restored. Russia must withdraw all of its military forces from the temporarily occupied territories and cease the hostilities against Ukraine.

• As long as Putin and his clique don’t show a slightest inclination to negotiate anything but full destruction of Ukraine, every “negotiate now” call only makes him dig his heels deeper in Ukrainian soil. Putin must stop what he is doing.

• Peace could be achieved when this war of aggression starts hurting Russia much more than it does now – because of the sanctions, financial losses and defeats on the battlefield. Only then it would be possible to force Moscow to stop its aggression and to return respect to the Goals and Principles of the UN Charter – and to confirm the end of the war.
