Russian war against Ukraine: Present situation (Ukrainian Embassy in Tunisia)

RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR UPDATES

  • Russia’s attempts to break through in the eastern part of Ukraine were stopped by the Ukrainian Defence Forces. The Russians continue to attack unsuccessfully in several directions.
  • Ukrainian troops focused on the destruction of enemy manpower, military equipment, ammunition depots and logistics in the rear.
  • A significant weakening of the resource and logistics capabilities of the Russians is a prerequisite for the liberation of the occupied territories.
  • Despite difficult fortifications, engineering barriers, and minefields, Ukrainian troops continue to move forward gradually.

THE REFUSAL OF RUSSIA TO EXTEND THE GRAIN DEAL

  • On July 17, Russia announced that it was withdrawing from the grain deal. Putin’s Russia is trying to make famine its weapon in the international arena.
  • Russia has created a real threat of famine in Africa, just 10 days before the announced start of the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg.
  • This is another slap in the face of African leaders, after the missile attack on Kyiv during their visit on June 16.
  • Calls of Russian propaganda for immediate attacks on the Ukrainian port infrastructure will not scare Ukraine. Terrorist provocations will receive a proper military and political response.
  • The Black Sea grain corridor must be protected from Russian attacksby escorting the Black Sea countries by naval means.

AGGRESSIVE NATURE OF RUSSIA

  • President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa said that Russia threatened war in the event of Putin’s arrest at the BRICS summit.
  • The arrest warrant for Putin in the case of illegal deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, issued by the International Criminal Court, is a powerful signal to the global society.
  • As a party to the Rome Statute, South Africa has an obligation to arrest Putin if he appears on its territory.
  • The threat of war in South Africa is another violation of international law and the principles of civilized coexistence in the world by Russia.
  • Blackmail also demonstrates the true attitude of Russia to South Africa and other African countries.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY CHALLENGES

  • President of the UN General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi said that the UN SecurityCouncil failed to adopt any resolution related to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
  • Most countries around the world are aware of the Russia’s responsibility for the unprovoked and illegal aggression against Ukraine.
  • UN Security Council is ineffective, since the aggressor state in it has the right to veto decisions. The current international security architecture has proved unprepared for the challenge of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
  • Russia holds the seat of a UN member and a permanent member of the UN Security Council illegally, since it is the seat of the former USSR.
